Golden Autumn
Published 27 november 2023
Good day! Traditionally the season of autumn is associated with bright warm colours of leaves. This year I've taken a number of photos boasting golden hues! Check out the "Nature" and the "Urban stories" sections on Photos page. I've used the Calibration tool in Lightroom Classic to enhance the automnal colours !

Hello! The compilation page is currently under construction and is unavailable for viewing. I am thinking of a different way to show my photo galleries.
New "Compilations" page

Hello! Contrary to the previous entry the links to the photo albums won't be kept in the "News" page. As the photo albums are more and more substantial and numerous a new page has been added for the easier access. Check out the "Compilations" page!

Plants with feathers?!
Published 1 february 2023
Mid-January I’ve walked in my local wood (Bois du Moulin des Marais) and happened on the bush of wild clematis. There are a lot of them in the area and I wouldn’t even have looked twice if the weather was different. On a clear afternoon the clematis feathered grains were backlighted by the sun and looked beautiful. Those feathers were flowing in the wind creating an airy feeling!
Check out the photo gallery “Airy Fantasy” through the Photo page.
Olympus E-M1 Mark III, lens Olympus M 60mm F2.8 Macro, ISO 400, 1/500, F/3.5
Photographing them was challenging as I wanted a specific angle for the light and composition, and the branches kept moving around. The focus was definitely the most difficult. I used an open aperture, f/3.5 mostly, to get a good bokeh with a quick exposure of 1/500 or 1/640 per sec. The lines of feathers and the small depth of field help to preserve the dynamic feeling of movement, the soft texture while freezing the subject. Most pictures were a bit dark but the basic editing wasn’t that difficult. I also experimented with white balance and colours quite a bit, especially with the backgrounds. One of the photos now lives in the “Experiments” page.
Home auto portrait photo shoot.
Published 18 january 2023
Hello! I’ve tried shooting an auto portrait at home. What an interesting experience! Organizing a proper space was a bit problematic in our apartment – no walls free of furniture facing the windows. And I wanted to use a 75 mm lens, so some distance between the camera and the model was necessary. We made do with what we had at hand. For example, a long white cloth was used as a background. It’s quite wrinkly and the light emphasized the shadows but it looks like there is a deliberate pattern and the bokeh helps to make it unassuming.
My father helped me to place the lights (there were three sources facing the white ceiling and walls, imitating a soft box). I used the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III camera (micro 4/3) with an Olympus M.Zuiko 75 mm f/1.8 lens. The big difficulty was to focus correctly, that’s why I used the backrest of a chair as a reference point (manual focus). But even at f/5.6 the depth of field was quite narrow and with a slow shutter speed (didn’t want too high ISO) I had to stay immobile and close to the backrest. Also, had to go back to the camera to press the shutter button and come back to pose within the timer limit. Back and forth … quite a number of times. Next time I’ll definitely use a phone app!
So, I had a certain idea for my portrait – a classical, serious pose with and without flowers. Then I tried to use the chair and posed around it. At some point it became a game and I’ve started making different emotional faces. It was a great fun! But I originally planned a short photo shoot of a certain look and I didn’t try out different outfits and the prepared accessories were very limited. At the end I felt that the poses and the look were a bit uncreative, though scotched to the chair I had limited options! The camera was at a two and a half meters’ distance at most from the model. The 75 mm lens gives a narrow frame, on some waist portraits the elbows are clipped. I guess, the camera had to be farther away or it would’ve been better to use a different lens. Overall, I’m pleased with this photo shoot and you can see a couple of those photos in the About me and Contacts pages of this web site.
Last but not least! I’ve just learned to make composite pictures in Lightroom Classic. In this post are my first ones!
Happy New Year 2023!
Published 1 january 2023
Starting something new is both exciting and nerve wrecking. I have always been slow with digital technologies as well as web and social media. But they make such a big impact in our contemporary lives. I don't wish to be a dinasaure in our age! So I'll make it a new year resolution to learn. My journey as a photographer is at the beginning - this blog will be a place to share the milestones. A place of curiosity, discipline and creation!
This New Year day is wet and gloomy but the beauty of the world is still there before our eyes! On my way from the baker's I've found this small snail on the bush and it's pretty cute. My first photo since a couple of weeks! I feel quite fortunate!
And in the evening - a great opportunity to experiment at the crossroads with new year's illuminations and traffic. It looks a bit like light writing technique but I've mouved the camera as well as used a pretty long exposure.
